I confused this spider at first with a wolf spider, considering its stripes and hunting stance.  After looking more closely at its eye configuration, I figured it was something else. Wolf spiders often have 2 large eyes facing forward, and this spider did not have that configuration.  Took a look in my Australian spider books, and saw it resembled a Large Sac spider.  This has been confirmed with Mr. Hirst in Adelaide.

The featured photo is of a very large sac spider, about half the size of an adult hand, or 3 inches long. An extensive web was built, and you can see that partially on the last row, middle pic.

The spider on the green fabric was found in leaf litter, on the ground.

Common Name Large Sac
Order Araneida
Family Miturgidae
Genus/Species Miturga spp.
